New board elected, new CEO appointed to lead Belize’s booming livestock industry

By Hugh O’Brien: On Saturday, March 25th, the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) held its 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at its headquarters on the George Price Highway in Belmopan.

With the livestock industry booming, particularly the cattle subsector, the AGM drew the attendance of over 400 livestock farmers from all six (6) districts.

During the AGM elections were held for a new Board of Directors and elected to serve are: Jefferey Reimer, Franz Rempel, Arden Edwards, Gerhard Penner, Darrel Tillett, Peter Friesen, Alexis Blanco and Abram Frose.

Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai was the guest speaker for the event. Minister Mai thanked the BLPA for its able leadership in charting the way for the continued growth of the livestock sector. He lauded the recent progress made by the sector, and highlighted the importance of maintaining and expanding the export of cattle to Mexico. The Agriculture Minister also encouraged the farmers to continue to work closely together with the Ministry and the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA), improve their genetics and make their production systems more climate resilient.

William Usher, who was recently appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the BLPA was introduced to the association’s members.
