Construction Worker is accused of raping and assaulting 15-year-old girl remanded to prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-five-year-old construction worker Ector Lemus has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison following allegations that he raped and assaulted a 15-year-old girl.

Lemus appeared in the Belie City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was charged with one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

The Magistrate explained that rape is an indictable offense so he did not need to enter a plea because the matter will be trialed in the High Court of Belize.

The prosecution objected to bail on a number of reasons, including the severity of the accusation, the potential harm to the victim if Lemus is released since he knows her, and the prevalence of minors being sexually assaulted in Belize.

The Magistrate agreed and remanded Lemus to prison until May 2. She explained to him that he had a right to apply to the High Court for bail, and that the Magistrate’s Court cannot consider bail until 90 days have passed.

The victim alleges that Lemus raped her in September 2021, and touched her inappropriately on two separate occasions in January 2022.
