“King Sugar” doing well in ninth week of crop

Posted: Thursday, March 2, 2023. 5:33 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Official information from Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI/ASR) suggests that things are going fairly well up north in the ongoing sugar season.

With nine weeks of crop completed as of February 26, a total of 31,815 tons of sugar has been produced from 343,692 tons of sugar cane, compared to 28,843 tons of sugar from 287,449 tons of cane to this point last season.

The Tower Hill mill is grinding at close to 5,700 tons per day compared to 4,700 at this point last season.

However, indicators for sugar in cane stalks and juice purity are down slightly while the percentage of mud in the cane is about five to six percent, meaning the cane is less pure.

BSI/ASR recommends that farmers begin delivering the remaining standover cane so that it can be milled in much-improved weather conditions.

The season is projected to finish sometime between late May and early July with an expected 1.15 million to 1.3 million tons of cane ground.
