Repeat offender, Sherie Gillett sentenced to prison for crack pipes

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Only one week after being fined for possession of a crack pipe, 28-year-old Sherie Gillett appeared in court again for the same offense, but this time she was confined instead of fined.

Gillett appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, charged with one count of possession of a pipe. She appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser who said she appeared high, but Gillett contended that she was only nervous.

Gillett pleaded guilty to the offense, telling the Chief Magistrate that she is trying to change her life. Fraser countered by asking Gillett if she was trying to change her life, why would she be caught only a week leather with another crack pipe?

For her guilty plea, Gillett was sentenced to one year at the Belize Central Prison, where the hope is she will participate in a rehabilitation programme to assist her with her battle against substance abuse.
