San Pedro Pirates, Verdes lead Premier League of Belize at end of 1st Round

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Pirates and Verdes lead the Premier League of Belize at the end of the First Round with 14 points. However, the Pirates are tops because of goal difference.

They scored 19 goals and allowed eight while Verdes have scored 14 and permitted seven. Must say here that they benefitted from two extra goals considering the overturned 2-1 loss to Port Layola got turned into a 3-0 win due to Port’s fielding an ineligible player.

Port Layola are next with 12 points. Had they not lost those three points to Verdes, they would have been first with 15, plus they would have been officially undefeated. In fact, they would have been the only undefeated team since everyone else has lost at least once.

Benque Viejo United follow in fourth place with 11 points. Progresso are right behind them in fifth place with ten points.

Champions Altitude lag in the sixth spot with nine points. Plagued with injuries, they certainly are suffering from the ‘bad luck’ many champions go through after winning a tournament.

After six consecutive losses, Wagiya won their first match of the championship over Internacional and got out of last place. They are now seventh with three points.

Internacional, previously the Bandits, got dumped into last place with only two points from seven games. They are hoping that the new Mexican sponsorship and two new Mexican players will help get them out of the rut.
