Team PACT goes for another win in the Belikin Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge this coming weekend

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Team PACT, comprising Amado Cruz, Jerry Cante, and Daniel Cruz, swept the Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge last year winning all four stages and are now poised to do the same this weekend.

Slim & Trim like Guava Limb, comprising Andres Cabb Jr, Daniel Cruz Jr, and Javier Guardado, were second and the Belize Coast Guard, made up of Wilberto Daniels, Kenrick Daniels, and Daniel Gregorio, were third last year.

Sponsored by the Belize Tourism Board, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) won the race last year after a hiatus in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the race had just been staged when the country went into lockdown in late March.

This year’s edition of the Belikin Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge, the biggest canoe race in Belize, starts on Friday morning at 7:00 am under the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio. The 175-mile race is staged through four days finishing on Monday past the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.

Stage 1 goes from the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio to Banana Bank on Friday, March 3.

Stage 2 heads from Banana Bank to Double Head Cabbage on Saturday, March 4.

The Third Stage stretches from Double Head Cabbage to Henderson’s Bank in Burrell Boom on Sunday, March 5, setting up the final Stage 4 on Monday, March 6, from Burrell Boom to Belize City finishing by the Belize City Centre.

The organizers advised paddlers that the pre-race meeting will be held on Thursday, March 2, at 5:00 pm at the Macal River Park. Teams have up to 5:00 pm to register.
