Twelve former employees of Services Oriented Security file lawsuits for back pay

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twelve former employees of Services Oriented Security (SOS) have all filed civil suits against the company this week for wages that have not been paid.

The employees have times of service ranging with the company from just a few months to as many as 18 years. One such worker told our newsroom that he is 71 years old and is owed as much as $5,000 in back pay. Another worker, who had two years of service before resigning, says the company owed him $1,000.

The company’s owner and supervisor, Paul Garcia and Crispin Spain, were at the courthouse yesterday on a separate matter, but the employees said that they just ignored them.

Garcia and Spain appeared in court with respect to owing the Social Security Board (SSB) over $8,000 in unpaid contributions, despite making deductions from the salaries of employees. They pleaded guilty to failed to pay Social Security contributions last year and worked out a payment with the SSB, but since then they reportedly have not made any payments. Their attorney, Orson Elrington, requested an adjournment and it was granted. They are due back in court with respect to that matter on March 14.

Meanwhile SOS’s three-year contract to provide security services at the Magistrate’s Court, came to an end on March 1. There is no word on whether or not that contract will be renewed, and the past few months have been turbulent, with employees taking industrial action against SOS in the form of sick outs and go slows.
