By Benjamin Flowers: The National Student Union of Belize (NSUB) has elected a new President, Ashely Longford.
While the presidency is a new role for Longford, she is no stranger to student advocacy, having served on the NSUB’s executive since 2020 and held the role of Vice President in 2022.
Longford told Breaking Belize News that the executive had encouraged her to take on the presidency when the post became vacant and she accepted out of a desire to see the quality of life improve for Belize’s tertiary students.
When asked how she intends to leave a mark with her presidency Longfor said she is aiming at improving the lives of students by addressing pertinent issues, such as the transfer of credits.
“Me and my executive council get complaints from different students in Belize of different tertiary level institutions saying that they can’t transfer credits. They did the same course for their Associate’s Degree now then they have to do the same course for their bachelor’s and they can’t transfer their credits. It’s honestly ridiculous and very costly,” Longford said.
She said that the union intends to work with schools to find a solution to that particular issue, as well as many others.
The NSUB is a union that is a students’ union that caters to students at the tertiary level in universities and junior colleges across Belize and to Belizean students abroad. Notably, the NSUB is the first-ever and only such union for students in Belize.
