Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU) announces and mourns passing of Brian Perez

Posted: Friday, March 3, 2023. 2:51 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU), the trade union representing employees of Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), has announced the passing of BEL worker Brian Perez, who died in hospital after being shot on Thursday night during an armed robbery attempt/home invasion.

The BEWU stated that “Perez’ life was senselessly taken away at the hands of someone wielding a gun within his own residence. Perez was to all of us a jovial, very respectful, and kind-hearted person, who had his own hopes and dreams, which were brutally ended. We demand justice, but more than that we want to raise our voices and join the countless Belizean families who have lost their loved ones to gun violence.”

The Union adds that this includes ensuring a proper investigation to mete out justice and to try to understand how this level of violence is “still allowed to exist within our small community?”

The Union has extended its condolences to his family, including his father who was a union member and former BEL employee. Police investigations continue.
