Posted: Friday, March 3, 2023. 1:23 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In honor of Women’s Month, the British High Commission is highlighting outstanding Belizean women.

Ensign Loany Ruiz is a mother of two beautiful children, born and raised in the Cayo District.

At the age of 32, not only has she climbed Victoria Peak and paddled the La Ruta Maya twice, but she has also won the End of The World full marathon.

She enjoys all outdoor activities, especially when they come with a challenge.

Loany is a dedicated mother, a hardworking entrepreneur of a small party store called The Party Corner and a dedicated Ensign of the Belize Coast Guard who strives to make a difference.

Ensign Ruiz joined the Belize Coast Guard in 2014, passing at the top of her class and earning the Best Female Award.

She immediately joined the engineering department and began working as an office clerk.

Being exposed to the engineering field, she came to love the boat engineering work and quickly worked her way out of the office and into the field.

She became the first female engineer for the Belize Coast Guard and was awarded Engineer of the Year 2017.

After commissioning in 2022, she joined the fleet and became a Patrol Commander leading and commanding the crews at sea.

Ruiz is intended to return to the engineering department as the Engineering officer in 2023, where she will keep leaving positive footsteps.
