By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Corozal resident was fined over $6,000 in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week, following a conviction for drug trafficking.

Jose Maldonado appeared unrepresented in court on Thursday, for the conclusion of his trial for a single count of possession of controlled drugs with the intent to supply to another with respect to just over 5 kilograms of marijuana.

Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford presided over the case and fined Maldonado $6,500 plus $5 cost of court. He was given until August 31, 2023, to pay the fine or he faces 15 months in prison for default.

The case stems back to October 4, 2018, when he tried to elude police at a checkpoint on the Philip Goldson Highway. The officers set chase and found him tossing something out of the passenger window of his taxi, which later turned out to be five parcels of marijuana totaling 11.64 pounds (5.2 kilos).
