By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On March 3, 2023, the Department of Youth Services held their annual Youth Awards.
Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rossana Briceno recognized Alida Leon with the Special Envoy Award.
“Alida Leon is a true role model. She is someone that battled with mental health challenges during the challenging Covid-19 period, I know her to be someone with big dreams and career goals of being an engineer – breaking stereotypical barriers. She is a strong young woman,” Briceno said.
Leon is enrolled at Stann Creek Ecumenical Junior College majoring Business Management and Accounting.
Leon aspired to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
“I’m motivated to pursue a career as a civil engineer and entrepreneur.
I love the outdoors and I’m really daring.
I experienced mental illness (anxiety and depression), but I was able to overcome it with the help of God (prayer), counseling, joining groups for support (POWA), spending time in nature, engaging in enjoyable hobbies, and watching motivational movies on mental health,” Leon stated.
Leon says that having experienced mental illness, she is able to support those who are experiencing it as well.
