By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Griga Dream Ballers shocked the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes 85-76 on Saturday night in Dangriga and at the same time caught up with the Hurricanes and the Digi Belize City Defenders at the top of the Belize Elite Basketball League with a 4-2 record.
Edgar Mitchell led Griga to their third straight win with 19 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 assists.
The Hurricanes’ Victor Evans hit 23 points for the Hurricanes with 7 off the glass.
The Belmopan Red Taigaz moved up to a 3-2 record on their 106-91 win over the Punta Gorda Panthers at the PG Sporting Complex. PG fell to 1-5.
Despite Davis Tavian’s 43 game-high points, the Panthers couldn’t stop the Taigaz onslaught led by Jeremiah Toney and Benjamin Page, who combined for 54 points. Toney sank 29 while Page added 25. Both also recorded five rebounds each.
On Friday, the Western Ballaz and the Orange Walk Running Rebels leveled their win-loss record to 3-3.
Led by Mark Gordon’s 39 points, the Western Ballaz beat the San Pedro Tiger Sharks 96-87 at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio. Kyle Steward topped the Sharks with 22. San Pedro fell to a 1-4 record.
In Belize City, James Stanback (30) and Brian White (20) combined for 50 points in the Orange Walk Running Rebels 91-85 win over the Benny’s Belize Defenders, who dropped their second game. Lorenzo Dillard hit 25 and Nigel Jones contributed 23 for the Defenders.
