10-year old Collin Young sails and wins hearts in 94th Annual Baron Bliss Harbour Regatta

By Glenn Tillett: This is 10-year-old Collin Young of the Placencia sailing club who sailed and won races on Sunday in the 94th Annual Baron Bliss Harbour Regatta.

I didn’t see any of the races between the sailing dories, Lazers, Bosums, and Optimists, I was simply too tired after traveling to Griga last night, and staying up late Friday night while still battling a bout of anemia.

I got out to Buttonwood Bay just as the prizes and congratulations were being awarded and was beyond impressed with the many young sailors, boys and girls, from sailing clubs in Belize City, Corozal, Gales Pont Manatee, and Placencia. I am hopeful that there will soon enough be sailing clubs from Yabra, Griga, Hopkins, Seine Bight, Barranco, and Punta Gorda.

The Harbour Regatta Committee obviously put a huge effort into today’s races and I can’t say enough how impressed and how grateful I am for their hard work and sacrifices.

I arrived late because my heart of hearts was weighed down after learning that the lighter, the 100-year-old-plus United had been destroyed by Hurricane Lisa. My eyes were damp as I viewed its remains – all scrap. I felt a part of the collective cultural soul of our nation had been destroyed.

But thanks to Collet Bunas Maheia and the committee, those wonderful young sailors, and the supporting cast of parents, relatives and friends, I felt the fire that is my love for the sea and sailing re-kindled again.

May the flame burn bright throughout the land, the coast … and the sea.
