A tribute to National Heroes and a benefactor

By Aaron Humes: The annual observance of National Heroes and Benefactors Day took place this morning at the grave site of Baron Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss below the lighthouse on Marine Parade.

The Government, represented by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam, Minister of Education Francis Fonseca and Financial Secretary Joseph Waight laid wreaths at the Baron’s grave and paid tribute to him and Belize’s two National Heroes – Right Honourable George Price and Honourable Philip Goldson.

As part of chronicling the legacies of Price and Goldson, Fonseca said, his Ministry and its associated institutions including the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) were pleased to assist with the compilation of Price’s speeches, “Let Belize Live: Speeches of the Premier and Father of the Nation Right Honourable George Price Volume 1” and “The Time To Save Your Country: Philip S.W. Goldson, Biography of a National Hero,” both released last year.

Relatives of the late Price and Goldson – the former’s nephew John Waight and the latter’s son Philip Goldson Jr. – read tributes to the men’s accomplishments. Once political allies, they would separate after 1956 but each contribute to the realization of Belize’s independence in 1981. Secretary Waight recalled the Baron’s choice to devote most of his personal fortune, made from being an engineer and investor, to the development of the then-colony of British Honduras mere weeks before dying aboard his yacht Sea King II on this day 97 years ago.
