Following special mission, CARICOM Heads pledge support for dialogue and solutions to the crisis in Haiti

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have issued a statement on the ongoing crisis in Haiti, following a meeting on Sunday, March 5th. The regional leaders have resolved to continue to encourage dialogue among Haitian stakeholders and to support efforts to find solutions to the multi-dimensional crisis facing the country.

The statement comes after a one-day CARICOM Special Mission to Haiti on 27 February, led by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness. The mission, meant to demonstrate CARICOM solidarity with Haiti, met with a broad range of Haitian stakeholders to hear their views on the way forward to a Haitian-led solution.

The Heads of Government agreed that there must be a follow-up meeting with the stakeholders to chart a path to consensus building in order to bring peace and stability to the country. They also pledged to support the Haitian National Police in their efforts to address the security situation, with a focus on the provision of training and humanitarian assistance.

In addition, the Heads of Government will seek support from African countries for Haiti, and work with the Governments of Canada and the United States as well as the UNDP on the ongoing issues. They will also approach both International Financial Institutions at the upcoming Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to ascertain what further assistance they could provide to Haiti.

The CARICOM Heads of Government commended Prime Minister Holness and the CARICOM delegation for their efforts in Haiti and welcomed the comprehensive report which was provided on the mission. The statement highlights the importance of dialogue and collaboration in finding a Haitian-led solution to the crisis.
