Slim and Trim Like Guava Limb take 4th leg of the 26th Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge in sprint

By Aaron Humes: Defending a 44-second lead going into the final leg of the Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge, the team of Slim and Trim Like Guava Limb used every remaining ounce of energy to hold off rivals Koop Sheet Metal in a sprint under the Belcan Bridge for the 4th stage win, hoping that this will push them over the hump for the overall title.

The teams set off from Burrell Boom this morning for a comparatively leisurely 26-mile drive to Belize City, covering the last leg of the Belize River and Haulover Creek.

Going into this final day the top four rivals were separated by just about a minute in cumulative time, meaning an early lead would throw the results into turmoil.

The Guava Limb team set the pace early today, but they conceded the $3,000 station prize at the Burrell Boom Bridge to Team PACT, their chief rivals over the past two days.

The winning team will be crowned at the conclusion of the race and after the teams’ respective times for each leg of the four day event are tallied. They will be presented with the Kinich Ahau trophy and other awards.

The River Challenge highlights both the route of the Maya people to get to their settlements across the country as well as the use of the river for commercial purposes in the export of logwood and mahogany and more recently the value of environmental protection.
