International News: 2 Americans dead; 2 rescued after being abducted in Mexico

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A road trip for 2 U.S. nationals that crossed into Mexico on Friday turned into a nightmare after they were shot at in Tamaulipas, Mexico and kidnapped, the Associated Press reports.

The 2 Americans that were rescued today were taken immediately to the U.S. with a convoy of ambulances and SUVs escorted by the Mexican military.

A relative said that the 4 Americans traveled together so that 1 of them could get a tummy tuck from a doctor in Matamoros, Mexico when their trip turned deadly.

Tamaulipas authorities confirmed that the 2 rescued Americans were turned over to U.S. authorities in Texas.

However, officials did not comment on their injuries.

Information surrounding the repatriation of the 2 bodies was also not released.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland extended condolences to the families of the victims.

“The cartels are responsible for the deaths of Americans. The DEA and the FBI are doing everything possible to dismantle and disrupt and ultimately prosecute the leaders of the cartels and the entire networks that they depend on,” Garland said.

The FBI had offered a $50,000 reward for the victims’ return and the arrest of the kidnappers.
