By Aaron Humes: Two Belize City men have been alleged to be members of a criminal gang.
23-year-old Fitzroy Myles of the Kings Park area and 24-year-old Clint Geban of Baracat Street, Port Loyola, have separately been charged with the offence of being a member of a criminal gang contrary to the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act.
Geban is alleged to be a member of the Southside Gangsters, or SSG for short, while Myles is allegedly a member of the Antelope Street Horse and Carriage One-Slap Clique, a subset of the infamous George Street Gang. Both claim to control territory in Southside Belize City.
The offence, if proven on summary conviction, can result in up to ten years imprisonment. Any subsequent conviction for the same offence can result in a jail term of as many as twenty-five years. In the case of gang leaders, a convicted person can serve a maximum sentence of twenty-five years in the first instance; a subsequent conviction can lead to a maximum sentence of forty years.
However, the Police Department has complained that as recently as 2020 when such charges began to be levied in furtherance of crushing gang culture, Magistrates typically levelled fines in response to guilty pleas as is their prerogative.
