By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Rotary Club of San Ignacio was founded in 1998 and its first President was Rafael Cal.
In memory of his legacy, the Rotary Club of San Ignacio named its scholarship program, the “Rafael Cal Memorial Scholarship”.
The Rotary Club of San Ignacio notes that the Rafael Cal Memorial scholarship program has been giving the opportunity for deserving primary school students to attend high school.
For over 12 years, students have benefitted from this program.
The Rotary Club notes that the success of the program is due to their selection process and the support of students needs all 4 years.
Being a scholarship recipient myself, I understand the importance of this opportunity and remain forever grateful to the Rotary Club for believing in me.
I was enrolled at Saint Ignatius High School in Santa Elena in 2003 and one evening after classes, my parents told me that the school had requested that the 3 of us attend a meeting at the office.
That meeting changed my life, I was awarded a 4-year tuition scholarship by the Rotary Club, I met the representatives from Rotary and graduated in 2007, the Valedictorian of that graduating class.
My parents, both from humble beginnings, were extremely proud and grateful since it wasn’t until 2006 that my parents managed to form Palma’s Lumber and Supplies.
It was truly a blessing and shaped my winning, goal-getting mentality that God believes in me, my parents believe in me, Rotary believed in me and with hard work and dedication, all my heart’s aspirations are attainable.
Thank you Rafael Cal! Thank you Rotary Club!
