Spanish Lookout Community celebrates 65th anniversary, sharing history

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On March 4 and 5, 2023, the Spanish Lookout community celebrated the 65th anniversary of their settlement in Belize.

An official ceremony was held which featured remarks by Prime Minister John Briceno.

“The diversity of ethnicities is national strength and the diversity in sectors and industries is economic strength. We congratulate our Mennonite communities on the 65th Anniversary of their settlement in Belize and we embrace and encourage the robust role they have and continue to play in our national development,” the Prime Minister noted.

Eddie Plett also shared the history of the community known mainly as a farming community.

Throughout the years, Spanish Lookout earned the name of its strides in the agriculture sector, adding to the Belizean economy in many ways including poultry, dairy, suppliers of hardware and auto parts and equipment and more.

Spanish Lookout was first established in 1958 when its founders relocated from the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico.

Ten years before heading to Mexico, they had relocated from Manitoba, Canada.
