By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: International Women’s Day is commemorated annually on March 8.
The United Nations (UN) noted that the theme for this year is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
Data from the UN show that women make up only 22 per cent of artificial intelligence workers globally.
In addition, a global analysis of 133 AI systems across industries found that 44.2 per cent demonstrate gender bias.
A survey of women journalists from 125 countries found that 73% had suffered online violence in the course of their work.
The UN says that women around the world have made untold contributions to the digital world.
“From the earliest days of computing to the present age of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, women have made untold contributions to the digital world in which we increasingly live. Their accomplishments have been against all odds, in a field that has historically neither welcomed nor appreciated them,” the UN noted.
However, a gender gap exists in digital access and this keeps us from unlocking technology’s full potential.
Notably, the U.N. says that the underrepresentation of women and girls in STEM education and careers remain a major barrier to our participation in tech design and governance.
Recently, the Government of Belize with the support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced the launch of the Itz’at STEAM Academy.

The Itz’at STEAM Academy aims to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics on a campus with a modern science lab, digital media studio, and maker space.
