Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Dr. Candice Pitts unveils Belizean sculptures in honor of International Women’s Day

Today, in commemoration of International Women’s Day, Belize’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Dr. Candice Pitts unveiled 6 Belizean sculptures to celebrate womanhood.

The Belizean sculptures will be displayed at the National Central Library in Taiwan.

The Belize Embassy in Taiwan collaborated with Belize National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) and Central America Trade Office (CATO) to commission these 6 sculptures that drew inspiration from 6 “larger than life” Belizean women.

Sculpture entitled “Flight” reflects Althea Sealy, a pioneer of modern dance in Belize. She has been an advocate and leader for dance performance and education for decades.

Sculpture entitled “GENESIS” reflects Beverley Smith-Lopez, an actress, dramatist, comedienne, educator, administrator and many other roles in the performing arts field in Belize.

Sculpture entitled “ESSENCE” reflects Rositha Balthazar, one of Belize’s greatest dancers and dance instructors. She was always at the forefront promoting and celebrating her Garifuna heritage through her dance projects.

Sculpture entitled “EMERGENCE” reflects Ashanti “Airbender” Garcia, a Belizean who has been working as a yoga teacher for over 10 years.

Sculpture entitled “CREATION” reflects Rebecca Stirm Lennan, a Belizean visual artist & designer. Her work ranges from painting and mixed media art, to digital design, photography, carpentry, and leather goods.

Sculpture entitled “Mother and Child” reflects Zyania Alonzo, who loves to express love through art.

The Belize Embassy in Taiwan thanks artists Curl Gordon, Bobby Westby and Anthony Vacaro for celebrating Belizean women through their art.

The exhibition runs until March 31, 2023.
