By Aaron Humes: Carpenter of Taylor’s Alley, Belize City, Brent Garoy, lost all he owned when a fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at his residence.
Garoy told Police that he was working in his carving shop when he was alerted of the fire by his partner. He found a fan that he had left on upstairs burning along with a mattress. Garoy was able to remove some of his belongings while neighbours alerted the Fire Service, who were able to extinguish the fire and keep it contained to the upstairs area. The value of that which was lost has not been determined and the structure and the lost items are not insured.
According to reports, an “Industrial Zone” has sprung up within Taylor’s Alley where more than 30 individuals are employed in mechanical and carpentry work. Garoy had received the contract to produce the winner’s trophies for the Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge but he lost even the money he had received for the contract, not to mention household items, clothing, and business equipment.
Station Supervisor at the National Fire Service, Kenneth Mortis, said investigators had concluded that the fire was caused by an overheated improper electric connection. He credited neighbours for assisting the Fire Service in containing the fire in the upstairs area.
Garoy, meanwhile, is asking for assistance to recover from this disaster. Anyone who would like to assist can contact Garoy at 633-8570.
