By Aaron Humes: The San Pedro Town Council is sounding a call to arms for temporary workers to clean up massive patches of sargassum blanketing the shores of Ambergris Caye.
The Council announced it was opening up temporary positions effective today, Thursday, to address the issue, with the possibility of future full-time employment.
If you are interested and in the area of Ambergris, visit the Town Council office on Barrier Reef Drive or a planned job fair at the Saca Chispas Field on the island on Friday, or call 226-2198, 226-6788, or 674-3009.
Per the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), “Sargassum is known as the brown algae that floats in sometimes mile-long clumps [and] is accompanied by a very unpleasant ‘rotten egg’ stench when washed on the beach, as described by many of those unfortunate enough to get close. Sargassum is integral in the homes of marine life, though, in recent years, piles of sargassum [have] invaded our shores, causing a strong blow to perhaps one of Belize’s biggest flows of income.”
