World Kidney Day 2023 – Kidney Health for All

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being observed as World Kidney Day under the theme “Kidney Health for All”.

The World Kidney Day Organization notes that kidney patients represent more than 850 million people worldwide.

In low and middle income countries, the organization noted that non communicable diseases including chronic kidney diseases are known to be the leading causes of death and disabilities worldwide.

The COVID-19 pandemic has provided an example of the challenges faced by health care systems in providing essential health services to patients with these diseases.

The organization encourages leaders to adopt integrated health strategies that prioritize prevention, early detection, and management of non-communicable diseases, including kidney disease.

In addition, it says that health care services should provide equitable and proper access to care for chronic patients in times of emergency.

Patients with kidney disease have access to Hemodialysis, a life-saving therapy, as it removes waste products and helps all the organ systems work properly, thus increasing the longevity of these people.

However, hemodialysis also has its challenges since patients on hemodialysis also face higher risks of complications like infections and cardiovascular diseases, as well as challenges like malnutrition, anemia (low hemoglobin level), vitamin deficiencies, and bone disease.

This is why on World Kidney Day, experts and health professionals join efforts to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health.
