By Breaking Belize News Staff: An American national who says he came to Belize with $100 and hopes of getting employment pleaded guilty to an immigration offense this week.

Thirty-nine-year-old Terrance McDaniel appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, charged with a single count of failure to comply with the conditions of a visitors permit.

He immediately pleaded guilty to the offense, apologizing and explaining that he did not know he needed to renew his permit. He added that he came to Belize on October 29, and days later the country was hit by Hurricane Lisa, so he remained in the hurricane shelter even after the fact.

For his guilty plea, McDaniel was fined $1,000 plus a $5 cost of court which he was ordered to pay forthwith or face 6 months imprisonment.

The Immigration Department also applied for a removal order which was granted. McDaniel is to be deported once the issue of his fine is resolved.
