Belize and United States celebrate 42 years of diplomatic relations

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The U.S. Embassy in Belize recently held a welcome reception for U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan.

In 2023, Belize and the United States are marking 42 years of diplomatic relations.

“Our two countries have celebrated decades of friendship, based on a mutual commitment to democracy, prosperity, and regional security. The United States and Belize enjoy a warm and cooperative relationship across a broad range of issues, including citizen security, environmental protection, sustainable economic, education, and cultural preservation,” Ambassador Kwan said in her remarks.

“I truly and genuinely look forward to working with the Government of Belize and civil society to continue advancing our common agenda and deepening even further the strong and abiding friendship of our countries,” the Ambassador added.

Ambassador Kwan shared that almost 70,000 Belizean Americans live in the U.S.

“In addition, an increasing number of American citizens live in Belize today, and nearly one million visitors from the United States contribute to Belize’s tourism market, which plays a critical role in Belize’s economic development,” she added.

The Ambassador said that the U.S. and Belize also share something else very much worth celebrating – the diversity of our people.
