Ladyville woman fined for breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s home and causing over $4,000 worth of damage with a machete

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Ladyville resident was spared prison time this week after being convicted of breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s home and damaging his household items with a machete.

Thirty-five-year-old Jaidie Alvarez appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where she was found guilty of a single count of burglary at the conclusion of a trial that began back in 2022.

In mitigation, Alvarez called one character witness who testified that she is a good person who simply made a mistake, and pleaded with the court not to send her to jail as she is the mother of two children.

Alvarez was then fined $3,000 but had $500 deducted from the total, due to mitigating factors. She was given until September 29 to pay, or she will spend three years in prison for defaulting.

The complainant told police that on February 27, 2022, he was at home with his girlfriend around 1:03 a.m. when he heard a noise at his bedroom window. Upon investigating he found Alvarez, his ex-girlfriend, outside cursing at him. He told her to leave and she said she would return, and around 10 minutes later she did, wielding a machete and threatening to chop him and his new lover.

The complainant went outside to speak with her, but as the situation escalated he ended up running away from his home to avoid Alvarez. She then went into his home and damaged several appliances and other items to a total value of $4,266.
