By Aaron Humes: The National Meteorological Service reports that a cold front is on its way from the United States into our area by late Tuesday or early Wednesday, ending a run of “Easter breeze”, warm temperatures and bush fires.
The cold front extends from the coast of South Carolina in the United States across the central Gulf of Mexico with a strong ridge following behind from the northwest. A trough across central Mexico extending into Guatemala, Belize and western Honduras, coupled with strong daytime heat is supporting the development of thunderstorms across Belize’s Maya Mountains.
An increase in moisture is predicted as the cold front moves across the northern Yucatan Peninsula late Tuesday, bringing low to moderate amounts of rainfall starting in the Maya Mountains Tuesday afternoon and low amounts on Tuesday night and Wednesday, along with a decrease in temperatures.
The 24-hour forecast is for mostly sunny skies on Tuesday and clear to partly cloudy skies tonight with little or no rainfall; then isolated showers or thunderstorms will develop mainly over the Maya Mountains and inland areas on Tuesday afternoon. For Tuesday night and Wednesday, expect a few showers and isolated thunderstorms developing over most areas of the country and temperatures falling a few degrees.
Our thanks to the forecaster on duty at the Belize Weather Bureau in Ladyville.
