Belize U-19 Boys Volleyball National Team falls to the United States 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 with respectable performance in NORCECA Continental Championship in Guatemala

The Belize U-19 Boys Volleyball National Team put up a valiant fight against the United States in a respectable 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 loss in the opening game of the NORCECA Continental Championship at ‘el Domo’ in Guatemala City on Monday.

The Belize team was overpowered in the first set but regained their composure and gave the United States a good run for their money in the next two sets.

Eleazar Mejia totalled six match points from two attacks, two blocks, and two serves. Daniel Musa tallied five points and Preston Smith, four.

For the United States, Finn Kearney earned 13 points. Sean Kelly added 10.

The United States gained 33 points from attack while Belize totalled 10. The US also earned five points from blocks and 10 from serves while Belize got six and three respectively.

The Americans recorded 27 points from Belize’s errors while Belize raked 35.

At the regional North American, Central American, and Caribbean Championship, Belize is in Group A along with the United States, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

Group B consists of Central American subchampions Guatemala, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Suriname.

On Tuesday, Belize will face Central American Champions Costa Rica at 4:00 pm. Belize close pool play against Mexico on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.

The United States are the tournament’s subchampions. In 2018, they lost to Cuba in the final in San José, Costa Rica. Puerto Rico beat Guatemala for third place.

After the first-round pool-play, the group winners advance directly into the semifinals, while second and third places will play in the quarterfinal round of the event. The medal matches will be played on Saturday 18.

NORCECA said the top two teams will qualify for the 2025 FIVB Boys U19 World Championship.

The matches are being streamed on Facebook Live by the Guatemalan Volleyball Federation at Fnvg Voleibol Guate.
