Accused burglars of Everyday Supermarket walk free after main witness fails to show up for court

Posted: Tuesday, March 14, 2023. 4:15 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two men charged with the burglary of Everyday Supermarket in Hattieville Village were cleared of the charge this week after the prosecution could not find its key witness.

Forty-year-old Rayner Coote and 22-year-old Avery Baine appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court charged with the July 20, 2021 burglary of the Asian-owned business.

The case had been called up last week and the prosecution requested an adjournment as the key witness had not shown up to court, but on Monday, when the case was called up again, the witness was nowhere to be found.

With that, the prosecution said that it had no other evidence against the duo and the case was dismissed for want of prosecution.

Both men maintain that they were wrongfully charged and said they feel vindicated by the outcome of the case.
