Belama man accused of breaking into Prosecution Branch office charged for two burglaries and a theft

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-two-year-old Kriston Smith, the Belama resident accused of breaking into the prosecution branch office located in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court parking lot, was accused of committing multiple crimes before being caught by police.

Smith appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was charged with two counts of burglary at one arraignment and one count of theft at the next.

Smith initially pleaded not guilty to the charges and said that he had cooperated with police and helped them recover some of the items stolen; however, the magistrate told him that since his plea was not guilty he did not need to explain himself. He then said that he would change his plea to gulty on the grounds that he did not have enough time to gather any evidence to prove his innocence but the Magistrate assured him he would have time.

Despite objections from the prosecutors in both matters, Smith received bail in the sum of $6,000 plus two sureties of $3,000 each for the burglaries, and $1,000 plus one surety of the same for the theft.

His theft case was adjourned for May 12, 2023.

Allegations against him are that between February 22-March 9, he stole electronics and power tools valued at $2,230. He was also accused of stealing a number of power tools with a combined value of $3,405.
