Early morning fire on Euphrates Avenue in Belize City destroys two houses, damages a third

By Benjamin Flowers: A fire on Euphrates Avenue, Belize City completely destroyed two houses and left a third with mild fire and water damage.

Authorities say that around 4:20 a.m., 31-year-old Evi Espejo awoke to the smell of smoke coming from his neighbor Clifton Defour’s house.

After Defour’s 12 x 12 plycem house caught fire the blaze spread to the home of 29-year-old Sheran Yam, which was a wooden upper flat on a concrete lower flat. While these two houses were destroyed, personnel from the Belize National Fire Service (BNFS) arrived on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire before it destroyed the home of 81-year-old Sheila Garbutt.

None of the affected houses were insured for fire damage and the combined value of the buildings and contents lost is still being calculated.

The BNFS is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
