By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) is conducting outreach campaigns and raising awareness at the risk of wildfires especially since the dry season has commenced.
FCD staff are actively monitoring fires in the Vaca Forest Reserve.
A training session was organized with farmers inside and surrounding the reserve’s buffer zones on the best practices and required standards to follow while burning for agricultural purposes.
This training was done in collaboration with the Belize Forest Department and Agriculture Department.
As part of the training session practical, a controlled burn was performed.
In April 2020, volunteers and farmers assisted FCD and the Forest Department and Fire department teams to tackle wildfires in the Vaca Forest Reserve.
