By Aaron Humes: Two residents of Placencia in the Stann Creek District are nursing injuries after an argument on Tuesday night erupted into a fight involving a knife and a firearm.
According to police, while waiting for his staff to close Rick’s Café along the Placencia Main Road, owner Richard Labonte, 54, an American, along with friends was accosted by a bartender from the Pickle Parrot identified as 30-year-old Belizean Rudolph Rudon who came from the tattoo shop next door.
They began to argue but according to Labonte when he realized Rudon was carrying a knife he tried to walk away.
Labonte alleges that Rudon followed “aggressively” and stabbed him in his right hand, causing him to drop his computer bag on the floor, containing his licensed nine-millimetre Glock pistol. Labonte retrieved his firearm and opened fire, injuring Rudon to both feet above and below the knee.
Labonte was treated and released from the Placencia Health Center. At the same time, Rudon was taken to the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga for further medical attention, where he is listed in stable condition. The weapons used in the incident were both retrieved and police investigations continue.
