International News: Surveys show Salvadoran President heavily favored for re-election

Posted: Wednesday, March 15, 2023. 4:00 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A survey done by a Salvadoran newspaper demonstrated that almost 70% of Salvadorans favor President Nayib Bukele as he seeks re-election, Reuters report.

Despite the country’s constitutional ban on serving consecutive terms, Bukele announced last September that he would seek re-election.

In 2021, the Supreme court ruled that a consecutive term was allowed, citing Bukele’s human right to run.

While many have criticized the move, Bukele said that developed countries have re-election.

La Prensa Grafica also noted that citizens remain divided on whether the constitution allows immediate re-election however, those who believe the constitution does not allow it, will still vote for Nayib Bukele.

Bukele remains one of the most popular leaders in Latin America partly due to his crackdown on gangs.
