By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who was arraigned this week for breaking into the Douglas Jones Street office of Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler has been sent to prison over unpaid fines.

Fifty-two-year-old Raymond Codd appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with a single count of burglary.

He was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison with respect to that offense; however, during his court hearing, it came out that Codd had not paid the court for fines he had incurred over previous convictions.

The Magistrate then sentenced him to six months in jail to settle the debt.

Codd had committed the burglary on the morning of March 13. Police found him trying to exit the building through a window around 5:30 a.m., but he could not leave because he got stuck. When questioned by police, Codd said that he was only picking up garbage.

Nothing was stolen during the incident.
