By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize City resident 41-year-old Gilberto Gallego, who was recently reported missing, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison over a firearm offense.
Gallego appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with a single count of altering a firearm without the permission of the Commissioner of Police.
He pleaded not guilty to the offense but since the charge is fire-arms related, bail could not be granted at the Magistrate level. He has been remanded until May 16, pending a bail application at the High Court of Belize.
Gallego went missing on March 8 and on March 11, his home was burglarized. Police made a search of his home and found his .223 rifle with two magazines containing 30 live rounds and equipped with a laser targeting sight, inside his vehicle. Police told Gallego’s common-law-wife that the rifle would be taken to Precinct 1 for safekeeping.
Gallego presented himself at the precinct on Tuesday, brandishing a special protection license to show that he was legally in possession of the gun; however, the laser sight did not form a part of the license, so he was arrested and charged.
