American national sentenced to six months in jail for failing to pay fine for immigration offense

Posted: Thursday, March 16, 2023. 8:30 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-two-year-old American national Gregory Brown is spending the first night of a six-month prison sentence after being unable to pay his fine for an immigration offense conviction.

The Connecticut resident was fined $1,000 plus $5 cost of court for a charge of illegal entry.

When Brown was apprehended by police in February, he claimed that he came to Belize seeking asylum; however, the Immigration Department said that there is no record of such an application. Immigration also said that Brown has no work permit or an extension on his visitor’s permit, and initially filed for a removal order against him.

He was to be removed within two weeks of the order being granted provided that he paid his fine; however, the execution of that order has been delayed until after he finishes his sentence.
