British High Commission highlights Senior Database Administrator, Norma Tzul

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In honor of Women’s Month, the British High Commission is highlighting outstanding Belizean women.

Today’s feature is on senior database administrator, Norma Tzul.

Tzul holds a Master’s in Information Systems and Applications from National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Tzul has been a Database Administrator at the Central Information Technology Office (CITO) since December 2008.

Through hard work and dedication, Tzul has been promoted several times within the SmartStream Department based on her exemplary performances.

She is now responsible for managing the SmartStream Department, staffed with five database administrators.

This division is primarily responsible for maintaining the SmartStream database management system’s integrity and providing ongoing support to authorised public users.

SmartStream is an Enterprise Financial Management Information System that is used by the Government of Belize (GOB) for its finance, accounting, personnel, and payroll processes.

As the senior-most database administrator, Tzul oversees and ensures that all SmartStream Modules are optimised to capture and process financial transactions for GOB efficiently.

She plays an essential role in establishing and testing disaster recovery plans aimed at addressing the business continuity requirements of the GOB.

She engages with policy-makers to collect finance-related requirements and ensures that those requirements are accurately communicated to the other database administrators to adequately implement solutions that would meet business requirements.

Tzul works closely with CITO’s computer system and network administrators to ensure the underlying IT infrastructure and networks are configured for appropriate system access.

Tzul is also tasked with training her staff, communicating job expectations, and conducting employee performance evaluations.
