Ministry of Agriculture, Belize Livestock Producers Association open new corral to serve small livestock producers at Yo Creek Agriculture Station in Orange Walk

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A new corral which will serve as a weighing station, quarantine hold, technology transfer point, and training center, and which will assist small farmers in particular, was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Orange Walk Agriculture Station in Yo Creek.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) and the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) signed a memorandum of understanding for the administration of the new facility which will be operated by the BLPA.

According to MAFSE, the newly built cattle corral is a project accomplished through collaboration with the BLPA.

Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai applauded the close working relationship the BLPA has with his ministry while reiterating the importance of livestock to the country as a livelihood and as a significant contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Mai challenged the BLPA and MAFSE to continue their collaboration to ensure they meet the industry’s goals.

After the ribbon cutting, BLPA Chairman Jeffery Reimer presented Minister Mai with a token of appreciation for the work he has “contributed to agriculture, livestock and the BLPA”.

Now that the export to Mexico is increasing after the neighbouring country gave the green light to cattle exportation from all areas of Belize to Mexico, the corral will be particularly beneficial to small livestock farmers who don’t have the special conditions (as mentioned above) necessary for cattle exportation that the Yo Creek corral has.

MAFSE said the BLPA comprises more than 5,200 small livestock farmers in its membership.
