Ministry of Infrastructure Development, local authorities collaborate to upgrade Old Border Road Area streets in Benque Viejo del Carmen

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has been working with local authorities on upgrading streets in the Old Border Road Area in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

Before the George Price Boulevard was constructed in Belize’s westernmost town, the road that led to the Belize-Guatemala border was through St Joseph Street up the hill past the old cemetery which is now Centennial Park.

Over the years part of that road was left unattended. In fact, according to the social media page of Cayo West Representative Jorge ‘Milin’ Espat, the entire area needed attention.

“The Old Border Road Area in Benque Viejo is currently undergoing street and drainage works,” the social media page of Cayo West Representative Jorge ‘Milin’ Espat said recently.

“After years of neglect, Hon. Jorge Espat, the Benque Viejo Town Council and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Development & Housing (MIDH) are finally making a positive change.
“With their collaborative efforts, the long overdue repairs are finally underway, ensuring safer and smoother roads for the community.”

Minister Espat’s social media page said the work being dine in the area are “making a positive impact on the lives of Benque Viejo residents. Let’s all look forward to the successful completion of this much-needed project.”
