Government pledges lights, cameras and a police substation on John Smith Link Road

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize has decided to enhance security on the John Smith Link road after a number of dead bodies were recovered from the area since the road first opened.

This week, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa, said that surveillance cameras will be installed along the road, and that the installation of those cameras will run parallel to the rollout of over 30 cameras being installed in San Pedro.

“I think a pole has already gone up on John Smith Road for one of the cameras, but even so, it’s not just about cameras, that area needs a police substation and so we are already in discussions with the Minister of Tourism and the BTB who have agreed that they will assist us in financing a substation for the John Smith Road,” Musa said.

He added that the road will need better lighting and that GOB is looking to Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) to assist in that regard. Musa stressed that the enhanced lighting, surveillance cameras, and the police substation will all be implemented on the John Smith Link Road this year as part of the initiative.
