By Breaking Belize News Staff: After more than eight years on remand at the Belize Central Prison, 27-year-old Jason Sanchez was handed a life sentence today in the High Court of Belize.
Sanchez was charged for the November 14, 2014 murder of Emmerson Arnold, and convicted on August 29, 2022.
At his sentencing today, Justice Herbert Lord explained that a total of eight years, three months, and 16 days (the time spent on remand) had been deducted from Sanchez’s sentence. He is eligible for parole after 30 years but must seek counseling through one of the many programs at the prison.
Arnold, 34 at the time, was walking on Gibnut Street headed to work around 6:30 a.m. when he was approached and shot six times in the back.
During the trial, the prosecution learned that key witnesses decided not to testify because they had received several death threats; however, the prosecution used the sworn statements they had previously given as evidence.
