Western Dairies: A dairy farming vision transformed!

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize’s renowned Ice-cream manufacturer, Western Dairies Limited (WD) shared a brief history of how their company transformed from a small wooden manufacturing plant to the most visited ice-cream store in Spanish Lookout and the expansion of products including WD’s water, WD’s milk, WD’s pizza, WD’s cheese and more.

Dairy farming has always been an essential part of the Mennonite farming history.

In 1967, 16 farmers and businessmen ventured their money to form Western Dairies.

Western Dairies’ dairy operations commenced in 2 wooden buildings purchased from a Canadian man whose venture had failed.

A loan was made to buy equipment for the operation.

The equipment bought was used and very inexpensive; some repairs had to be made before they were put into use, which created various challenges.

The first milk was bottled in recyclable glass bottles.

However, collecting them a week after delivery, they had to be adequately washed because they smelled.

Therefore a milk-packaging machine was later purchased, making it possible for milk to be sold in a more convenient and attractive packaging.

Although Western Dairies’ goal was solely to sell fresh milk, they now manufacture many other dairy products that are sold countrywide.

WD’s also has branches in towns across the country serving the Belizean public with 100% Belizean made ice cream, cheese and milk.

WD’s will also now be using tomatoes grown in Belize to produce their sauce for the pizzas.
