Cadets from Belize District compete in foot drill competition

Posted: Saturday, March 18, 2023. 1:20 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, cadets from across the Belize District are competing in a foot drill competition, spearheaded by the Community Policing Unit.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Howell Gillett noted that the activities provide an opportunity for young people to develop valuable skills, gain confidence, and learn about the importance of law enforcement.

“Joining a police cadet program can be a transformative experience for young people, giving them an insight into what it means to be a police officer and how they can contribute positively to their communities,” Gillett said.

Gillett says that police cadets assist young people to develop leadership skills.

“Being a police cadet can open up opportunities for young people who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. Cadets are often given the chance to participate in ride-alongs, observe court proceedings, and attend training sessions, giving them a taste of what it is like to be a police officer. This can be invaluable for those who are considering a career in law enforcement, as it helps them gain a better understanding of what the job entails and what skills are required to succeed,” he added.

There are over 800 police cadets countrywide.
