Civilian dead, police officer injured, following an early-morning traffic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old civilian is dead and a police officer was admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) following a traffic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway early this morning.

Police say that Joshua Martinez and PC #1923 David Griffith were on the right side of the road between miles 8 and 9 on the highway, rendering assistance to a driver whose vehicle was having problems around 4:30 a.m.

While they were rendering aid, a pickup truck being driven at the time by 52-year-old Manuel Ramos, came off the side of the road and slammed into the driver’s side of Martinez’s vehicle while he was in the driver’s seat. Martinez died on impact and PC Griffith suffered a fractured leg.

Griffith was taken to the KHMH where he is listed as being in stable condition.

Police are investigating.
