By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On March 17, 2023, the Belize Police Department promoted 62 women police officers.
The recognition is only fitting as it comes during the celebration of Women’s Month under the theme #EmbraceEquity.
Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams told News5 Belize that the officers that were promoted sat the recent promotional exams and went through the board interviews.
“Oftentimes we’ve heard managers, H.O.Ds speaking that they do appreciate women, but showing appreciation must be done by your conduct and not by words. In the department we are serious about making sure that we show the world that we love and appreciate the women who work with us,” Williams said.
Anaceli Petillo was promoted to Superintendent of Police and she noted that women use many hats, many roles at work and home.
“Being a police officer, you must do your work twenty-four hours around the clock. However, whilst I am at work, I use two caps. I put on the work cap and when I reach home, I put on the home cap, which I have to act in the capacity of a mother to care for my family,” she stated.
Commissioner Williams said that women are competent and at times, “even more competent than men.”
Commissioner Williams also noted that male police officers who sat the exam will be promoted next week.
