By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States is hoping that Honduras will reconsider the decision to switch diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China, Reuters report.

There is not yet any formal agreement which could indicate that Honduras can still reconsider.

On Tuesday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro said that the country would establish formal ties with China.

Panama, El Salvador and Nicaragua have changed sides from Taiwan to China.

Following the announcement, Honduras’ ambassador to Taiwan, Harold Burgos, met with Taiwanese foreign ministry officials.

The Government of Belize issued a statement following the announcement by the Honduran President.

“The Government of Belize declares its continued recognition of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a sovereign and independent nation. Belize and Taiwan will work to strengthen their cordial bilateral relations based on shared values, the respect for the rule of law, democracy and human rights, and mutual interests,” the Government said.

“Belize believes that on the basis of self-determination, the people of Taiwan should be recognized as an independent country with full membership in international organizations,” the statement added.
